The Great American Ballpark

On Thursday, Brian and I went to a Reds game with his work.  It was an afternoon game against the Cubs, and it was a very very sunny hot day.  I was extremely happy I brought my hat!

The seats we had gave us a great view of the game, as well as the Ohio River (just beyond the stadium).  The ballpark itself is very nice, and the sun made the green grass and red and blue uniforms really pop.  It was a beautiful day to be out.

The Cubs were ahead for most of the game, but they put in a pitcher at the end who basically gave the Reds the 3 runs they needed to tie (he walked a runner home!).  Then in the 10th inning, the Reds got a  runner in to win the game.  It was quite exciting in the last few innings during the rally.

Sushi step-by-step

We have been eating vegi sushi a lot, since we both like it a lot and I enjoy the practice.  I am getting faster at making the rolls, which is the time-consuming step (see below for pics).  I start by putting the rice on (not long-grained, I use white rice but you can also use brown).  There is a complicated rinsing process you are supposed to go through, but I just make my rice in the usual manner.  While the rice is cooking, I prepare the vegis that will go in the sushi, as well as pulling out the other ingredients (nori, sesame seeds, wasabi).  Once the rice is cooked, you need to put it in a large bowl and toss it with some rice vinegar for a while to cool it down and make it the right consistency (fairly sticky).

All the ingredients, ready to roll:

Start by putting nori (mat of dried seaweed) on the rolling mat:

Put rice on the seaweed, spreading it out in a thin layer (this step took the most time initially):

I like to season with wasabi at this point (Brian likes this stuff b/c it tastes a bit like horseradish), and I also add toasted sesame seeds:

Finally you layer on whatever fillings you want.  I make just vegi most frequently b/c fish sushi requires an extra trip to the right fish market to get sushi-grade fish (safe to eat raw) on the day you want to make the sushi.  Most commonly, we have cucumber, avocado, and scallions, but we also often have carrot, red pepper, yellow pepper, asparagus, green beans, or imitation crab meat.  Once all the stuff is in, all you have to do is roll it up and cut the roll into pieces.

Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra

Last week, I went to the symphony with Anne.  The show was Friday noon.  I found the tickets online earlier in the week for cheap.  The music was good, and it was also nice to finally get to Music Hall.  I had been meaning to go to Music Hall for a while, but this was my first visit.  It is a striking building, inside and out.  Because our tickets were so cheap, I expected them to be in the highest balcony.  Instead, we were in the first row!  It was really interesting to see the performers up close, although my neck was a little sore by the end of the performance.  We were sitting by the basses and cellos, but we could also see the conductor and a few violins very clearly.  Pictures were only allowed before the show and during intermission (not during the performance itself).  Here are a few shots I took.

Work in Hungary

It has been quite a while since we posted here, and a lot has happened.  I was in Hungary for several weeks.  Here are some pictures from that trip.

Sites in Cincinnati

Before I went to Hungary, Brian's parents came to visit us in Cincinnati. We spent a nice afternoon together, despite the chilly, windy weather. We went to the courthouse, saw a bit of the downtown area, and visited some nearby neighborhoods. Here are some pictures from that trip.

Pre-trip goings on

I am heading to Europe soon, so I wanted to post a few pics from the last few weeks before I go. On Oscar night, we went to see some friends from our Wooster days. It was very nice to see them and also to meet their large black dog, who was super friendly.

The ferrets are doing okay, although they are definitely showing their age more these days. The spend more time napping than ever before. That is pretty normal behavior for older ferrets. Here is Rex sleeping in the sweatshirt I keep on the floor just for him.

Since I will soon be going to the land of pork and cabbage, I have been eating a lot of fresh vegis now, while they are still available. We had sushi again this week, along with spring rolls.

I also experimented a bit with hand rolls, which is sushi formed into a cone and eaten whole. This is a pretty good way to use leftover sushi ingredients I think.

Cincinnati Art Museum

A couple days ago, Anne and I visited the Cincinnati Art Museum. It is very close to our house, so it was a long overdue visit on my end. It is a very lovely museum, and it has free admission because of a generous endowment. I will definitely need to go back sometime soon to see more of the permanent collection. Anne and I looked as several general galleries, as well as the special displays (Monet and Picasso) that they currently have. I forgot my camera, so I found some pictures online to show some of the things we saw.
